New American Paintings sponsors six juried competitions per year. The forty winners of each competition receive a four-page, full-color spread our critically acclaimed periodical. Five of the annual competitions focus on geographic regions (Northeast, South, Midwest, West and Pacific Coast), and the sixth is only open to current Masters of Fine Arts candidates who are attending schools based in the United States, and current year graduates.

2023 is New American Paintings' 30th year in print! To date, our periodical, New American Paintings, has featured the work of more than seven thousand painters from throughout the United States, many of whom have gone on to receive international attention. The publication benefits artists and viewers alike. While included painters receive international exposure, those with an interest in contemporary painting are provided with an invaluable resource for discovering new artistic talent. New American Paintings is a juried exhibition-in-print. Each museum-quality issue results from a highly selective juried competition and presents the work of forty painters.

Juror: Amy Sherald

Born in Columbus, Georgia, and now based in the New York City area, Amy Sherald documents contemporary African American experience in the United States through arresting, intimate portraits. Sherald engages with the history of photography and portraiture, inviting viewers to participate in a more complex debate about accepted notions of race and representation, and to situate Black life in American art.
