Burko is a painter and photographer who combines art and environmental research through direct action. Her work focuses on monumental geological phenomena, merging a vision that is panoramic, intimate and provocative. Her images of melting glaciers and threatened coral reef ecosystems reflect research and visual data from scientists and her own on-site experiences. Burko’s paintings, photographs, and time-based media poetically document a moment in our landscape, while reminding us of the consequences of a warming planet. Included in over 100 exhibits thus far, her works bear witness to changes in our environment, translating data into compelling imagery.
Burko will also discuss her newest book, Endangered: From Glaciers to Reefs, a project that compiles images from her recent exhibition at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington DC, and shares ideas about climate change, history, and the creative process.
