Résumé

Artist Statement

My interest in photography was reawakened two summers ago, when I attended a class taught by Andy Karr, author of The Practice of Contemplative Photography, at the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies in Rhinebeck, NY. Through his Zen inspired exercises, he taught us to become more sensitive to the awareness of our surroundings, encouraging us “to see the world with fresh eyes.” It was a contemplative method to help us create the space for observation and make us aware of the discursive thoughts that might hinder our process.
This creative expression involved not only looking deeply, but using all of our senses, seeing with the whole body and mind. In addition, we were encouraged to be curious, tapping into our imagination and trusting the process as well as ourselves. We may not always know the origin of our inspiration, those “flashes of perception,” but to remain present and be guided by the chi or energy of that unique moment between the subject and the photographer.
There have been other teachers as well, that inform my work, such as my studies in Art History, travel and classic photographers. My subject matter is diverse, ranging from street photography, portraits and nature, to abstraction. Photography is a commitment of passion, to continue to discover new concepts of form and content, what to reveal, the nuance and mystery I wish to create.
“Spirit always stands still long enough for the photographer It has chosen.” Minor White
