Artist Statement

My current body of work combines the last 15 years of working abstractly with recurring representational elements, which include knotted forms, corporeal shapes, and watery spaces. The common thread of the knot provides visual structure in the works, both tying together elements and anchoring them in space; they may be both supportive and restrictive. “In every knot, I say a prayer” and they can become tangled in a single mantra. Where the knots take on powerful forms, the corporeal shapes struggle, play, worship, and murmur in engagement. Hands grasp, fly, and manipulate. Legs animate and open. Eyes look back at the viewer. Heads float on the crests of the water. The synthesis of these elements represents the collective human experience and my belief that it is both personal and spiritual.

Biography

Andrea Keefe received a BFA from the University of Michigan and an MFA from Miami University. She has participated in residencies at Vermont Studio Center, Soaring Gardens, and Arts, Letters and Numbers. Andrea has been making art and sharing it through exhibitions at the Lyet Gallery at Elizabethtown College, the Albers Gallery at Allens Lane Art Center, the Winter Gallery at Millersville University, the Speer Gallery at the Shipley School, the artists-run gallery, Grizzly Grizzly, and the Marlin Gallery at Camden County Community College. In addition to making art, Andrea teaches art at Central High School in Philadelphia. She also curates art exhibitions as co-director of MAC and its latest interaction miniMAC.
