Artist Statement

I’m drawn to the stories we tell about ourselves, from light to dark, personal to political, intimate to planetary. I’m especially interested in the wry revelations that slip through our stories; the satire and quiet irony that reveal what we’d rather not say outright. Much of my work begins with a sideways glance at human behavior and the contradictions we live with.

I’m always on the prowl for materials with a past: found objects, recycled wood, junk mail, metals. Wood reveals its wild grain when worked. Paper, especially the endless stream of junk mail, becomes pulp and then form. Metals like brass, copper, and silver can be transformed; tooled, cast, and polished. Working with these materials is a process of learning, experimenting, and solving problems I didn’t know existed until they appear. That sense of discovery, improvisation, and the way the work evolves drives my practice as much as any concept.

The assemblies that emerge often drift toward the edgier corners of our shared narratives. Exposing those darker tendencies can make them lighter, or at least more visible. Certain visual themes recur across my work; they matter to me for reasons I’m still uncovering. I invite your curiosity and your questions.

Artist Biography

George Dixon began his artistic journey at the Tyler School of Art, where he discovered a passion for creative expression. Extending his education, George pursued a career as a Registered Nurse and later transitioned into the field of medical software systems design specializing in designing tools that enhance clinicians' workflow and their ability to recognize critical information patterns.

Now retired, George has returned to his roots in the arts.

George explores diverse mediums such as photography, metals, and most recently, paper and found materials. His current body of work focuses on social and political commentary, utilizing layered textures and repurposed materials to provoke thought and dialogue. Through his work, George continues to examine the intersections between structure, care, ƒfaand the human condition, bridging his technical expertise with his artistic vision.
