I create pieces of art and music which are not merely subjective, and instead are direct translations of one another. My artwork can be performed as music, and the music I write can be expressed as visual art. I choose colors based on the relationship between the frequencies of pitches (Hz) and relative frequencies of colors on the visual light spectrum (THz), and I represent time using physical space. In doing this, I am able to utilize visual mediums to convey musical concepts which would be nearly impossible to express otherwise. I am constantly striving to create a balance between visually and aurally stimulating works which can function independently of one another but are best enjoyed in unison.
The majority of my compositions are designed to sound different every single time they are performed. This allows for creative expression in both musical and artistic realms, and encourages performers to make unique choices when playing each piece. My artwork is designed to be accessible to a wide range of musicians and viewers as to foster an appreciation for contemporary composition and art.
I am driven to create based on a deep sense of curiosity. As a lifelong artist and musician, I have always been interested in finding a way to combine my two loves. My process allows me to create works which explore both the connection between these disciplines, as well as larger concepts which can be expressed simultaneously in a visual and musical format. Through my work, I explore themes of choice, repetition, time, and play.
Lauren E. Cassidy (b. 1997) is an interdisciplinary artist currently based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She received her Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy from Queens University of Charlotte in 2019, and has been a Music Therapist-Board Certified since 2020. Lauren’s works can be found in private collections throughout the United States, Canada, and United Kingdom. Her artwork and music compositions have been featured in numerous galleries and museums, including the Smithsonian-affiliated Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Woodmere Art Museum. In her present work, she focuses on creating works of art which are playable as music compositions and composing music which is best notated as visual art.

This tapestry, constructed of surgical masks, is a direct translation of deaths related to COVID-19. The weekly number of COVID deaths in the USA was translated into pitch in order to compose a piece for solo viola. This composition was then transcribed onto surgical masks to create this piece.

Each group of four colors on a slight diagonal are representative of a chord. Performers can play each chord in any way for as long of a time as they choose. Chords may be played in unison or arpeggiated, as long as the performer plays each chord sequentially. This piece can be performed on any instrument, however a guitar tuned to open D is recommended.
This piece depicts a melody which can be performed by 2 people from 4 different directions. The melody harmonizes with itself when played backwards, forwards, and sideways.
