InLiquid returns for the third year in a row to SPRING/BREAK Art Show in New York City! In response to this year’s theme of IN EXCESS, InLiquid is excited to present InBreak, an immersive installation highlighting the work of 5 artists whose work is all darkly excessive, youthful, and irreverent. With a wink and a nod towards the SPRING/BREAK name, InBreak highlights the excessiveness of spring break culture itself.
It’s SPRING/BREAK, b*tches. It the time for unapologetic Americanism, pool parties, influencers, consumerism, intoxication, capitalism, and throwing ourselves full force into the spectacle™ to flush out our social media feeds. On the surface, all the artists included in InBreak channel the zeitgeist of American spring break culture: portraits oozing of sex and bodily perfection, misused toys, and leftover drug paraphernalia, but underneath their lamé veneer of boozy perfection lays a darker and more sinister content of the aftermath: broken bones and dreams, detritus, unbreakable altered states, and over-sexualization.
InBreak is an immersive environment that embraces the hyper-artificial ideal of excessive perfectionism that we often seek for a spring break backdrop, with an installation space covered in an artificial grass floor and sky blue walls with too-perfect clouds begging to be used for a backdrop for an Instagram post. In furthering the post-ironic use of the spectacle™ as an installation tactic, the installation itself will become interactive through live-props and social media pandering. Co-Curator Clare Finin has produced a limited batch of spring break “jewelry” as takeaways for visitors such as a laser-printed coconut bra necklaces worn with string. These throw-away pieces will have appropriate hash-tags to promote SPRING/BREAK as well as InLiquid and encourage the exact social media craze (and false realities) InBreak, and its works, highlights.
