InLiquid presents Fractured Reality, a show featuring artists Caroline Savage and Sarah Zwerling at the Old City Jewish Arts Center. Fractured Reality compares the photographic works of two distinct artists that are connected by their use of intentional abstraction. As memories always include elements of truth and embellishment, both Savage and Zwerling deconstruct recognizable images in order to challenge the viewer to question reality and dive deeper into the poetic intentions of the images, versus simply observing a static scene through their works. By stripping away information, capitalizing on photographic process oddities, and multi-layering techniques, both artists share a drive to reimagine reality and spark our imaginations.
About the Artists:
Sarah Zwerling lives and works in Philadelphia. She is the recipient of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowship, the Leeway Foundation grant, and was a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome. In addition to exhibition projects, Zwerling has completed site-specific commissions, including a large installation on view at the Philadelphia International Airport. Her work brings focus to natural forms through a digital process of simplifying photographic images.
Caroline Savage, born in Ismailia, Egypt, makes photographic and cinematic work. She has a BA in Art History from SUNY Binghamton, a BFA in Photography and MFA in Film from the San Francisco Art Institute. She has worked as a Program Director at the PA Council on the Arts, faculty at Dickinson College, SFAI, Temple University and is currently teaching Strategic Planning in the Theatre Arts Management graduate program at Rowan University. In 2006, Savage was awarded a Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowship in Media Arts. Her interests strongly lie in noticing and experiencing the ever moving, changing landscapes as a voyeur and flaneur of the transitory world.
Support provided in part by the Philadelphia Cultural Fund.
