Stepping out of doors, the spirit of fresh air and intense color of autumn is told in mood with bright colors rather than understand the specific story. I had the luxury to spend several autumns in Maine where nature slowly begins to take center stage and invite all to witness the display of magnificent colors. We stand in awe of this transformation, the yellow-green of undergrowth and sunshade’s shadow tinged with hints of blue and violet, the bright red-orange layers charge the entire surface and we are totally immersed, light doesn’t flicker here—-it glares. Photographs recall the specific details of the moment, however, I am not concerned about the details as I am about how nature wraps itself in a transparent veil that soften contrasts, hides details, simplifies lines and planes the essential forms and colors.
In my current work I continue to explore the printmaking boundaries, incorporating photo etching, carborundum and matte medium in order for the plates to provide just enough information to stimulate some memory of the past. Overlays of color come from an innate organic feeling, colors that define form, adding rich harmony creating a mood in order to appreciate and cherish autumn’s seasoned essence. By means of printmaking I forever remember the ebb and flow of changes, which the tongue can but clumsily define.
