Abstract photography is how I see beyond the ordinary. I take what’s familiar and give it a nudge—sometimes a shove—into the unexpected. My work isn’t about recording what the eye sees; it’s about capturing what the mind and emotions feel. I invite viewers to slow down, look closer, and connect with the quiet conversation between light, texture, and form that surrounds us every day.
I deconstruct reality to reveal its essence. Lines, shapes, patterns, and colors—often overlooked—become the subject. A crack in the pavement, sunlight reflecting on water, or the grain of wood transforms into a canvas. By removing context and reshaping perspective, I create images that are open to interpretation, encouraging each viewer to bring their own meaning to the work.
For me, abstract photography celebrates ambiguity. It embraces imperfection, mystery, and curiosity. Each photograph is a question rather than an answer—an invitation to explore memory, emotion, and imagination. I want the viewer to engage in a dialogue with the image, not be told what to see.
Photography has been a passion of mine since the birth of my first child. My children never had to wonder what their lives looked like—I documented it all. That lifelong habit of observation shaped how I see the world and, ultimately, how I create.
After retiring in 2017 following 46 years in retail and corporate banking, I finally devoted myself fully to my art. What once fit between responsibilities now takes center stage.
My goal is simple: to challenge perception, push beyond traditional boundaries, and reveal the extraordinary hiding in plain sight. I don’t define the meaning—I leave room for you to discover it.
I am a 2022 graduate of the TILT Institute and a contributing member of Art 504 Creative Collective.
Karen Bailey is an abstract photographer whose work explores light, texture, pattern, and form found within everyday environments. Photography has been a lifelong passion for Bailey, beginning with documenting her family from the birth of her first child and evolving into a sustained artistic practice rooted in observation and experimentation.
After retiring in 2017 following a 46-year career in retail and corporate banking, Bailey devoted herself fully to photography. This transition allowed her to expand her creative practice, focusing on abstract imagery that challenges conventional representation and encourages personal interpretation.
Bailey is a 2022 graduate of the TILT Institute and is a contributing member of Art 504 Creative Collective. Her work has been featured in numerous online exhibitions and juried shows and is created with the intention of transforming overlooked details into compelling visual narratives. Through abstraction, she invites viewers to slow down, reconsider perspective, and engage with the beauty hidden in plain sight.
