The InLiquid Gallery is the physical expression of InLiquid’s mission as a hub for visual art in Philadelphia. As a non-profit providing opportunities and a platform for enhanced exposure for local artists, The Gallery is the first permanent space that offers rotating curation of our artist members’ work. The Gallery aims to provide the local and visiting public with a social destination where artwork can be seen, enjoyed, experienced, and purchased.
InLiquid is proud to present Cuban Queens at the InLiquid Gallery, an exhibition by Liz Goldberg, running from March 9 through April 16. Throughout her career, Liz Goldberg’s work has explored the theme of the “diva” – the flamboyantly uninhibited woman and the personal and political empowerment she represents.
On a 2016 trip to Cuba, Goldberg, inspired by the vibrant colors, energy, and people she met, drew hundreds of live sketches on the streets of Havana. The paintings in the series were created based on the drawings of a group of women Goldberg got to know while in Cuba. Since then, her Cuban Queens have been an ongoing focus of her work.
Collaboration and shared inspiration are threads that run throughout Goldberg’s artistic practice. And the Cuban Queens paintings have sparked inspiration in artists of various mediums. Also included in the exhibition are the award winning, experimental animated film created in partnership with Warren Bass and Lowell Boston, and printed textiles made by designer Jaeyoon Jeong. Shown together create a dialogue between the three mediums. At play are the relationships between light, color, texture, movement, sound, and the energy and vibrancy that first inspired Goldberg in the streets of Havana— all in celebration of the archetype of the diva.
