By Simply Looking: The Art of Observation delves into the depiction of the mundane for what it is: raw, frank, and ultimately human. Through traditional realism, superrealism, photorealism, and hyperrealism, these artists tell it how it is.
Mary Henderson’s detailed portraits are inspired by her daily life as the mother of an adolescent daughter, backstage nerves at a ballet recital, under-cover giggles at a sleepover, and more. Jean Broden paints Philadelphia street scenes, with old brick buildings illuminated by soft sunlight. Daniel Dalmann and Eric van der Vlugt are experienced figure painters, capturing people and still life scenes with intense detail. In clay sculpture, Constance McBride explores themes of aging and gender. Both Emily Selvin and Darla Jackson look to animals for inspiration - Selvin working to honor the lives of perished small beings, and Jackson using animal forms to represent and explore human emotion.
