Exhibits & Events

InLiquid presents Muses, Guardians, and Saints, a showcase of the newest works by local artist Deborah Caiola.
With this body of work, Caiola welcomes us to consider and celebrate the identities that exist within each of us. Caiola created these layered, mixed media paintings from her imagination from 2016 – present. They are large-scale works that describe a range of archetypal identities. Caiola regards them as fundamental ways of being human that are passed down through generations and assumed through socialization and memory. To create context for her pieces, Caiola constructs an installation in the gallery that echoes the universal and organic aspect of the characters.
Artist Statement:
For much of my career I painted portraits and figures from life and photos. Five years ago I decided not to use references but to work intuitively, from my imagination. What emerged are characters I have come to regard as archetypal identities that exist within each of us. They are fundamental ways of being human that are passed down through generations and assumed through socialization and memory.
There are 15 large drawings and mixed media paintings and several smaller pieces in the exhibition. The mixed media paintings have 48″ x 36″ drawings transferred onto the wood to create the ground layer. The work is presented in an installation of objects and natural material that provides a context for the characters and emphasizes the organic quality and universality of these archetypes.
