FILADELFIA EN EL SEMICINCENTENARIO
Creative Philadelphia’s Art In City Hall program, in partnership with the offices of Council President Kenyatta Johnson and Council member Quetcy Lozada.
Theme:
For this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month, have invited artists to interpret the significance of America’s Semiquincentennial. What does it mean to be a Hispanic Philadelphian in this context, during this time? Artists are encouraged to explore cultural heritage and legacy and reflect on contemporary social issues and personal narratives.
JACQUELINE UNANUE STATEMENT
For me, the fusion of cultures and experiences has been very prominent in my work. After more than twenty-six years as an artist living and working in Philadelphia, I continue on a magical journey in a similar way to those prehistoric tribes who made rock art using paintings and engravings. My work for Filadelfia en el Semicincentenario brings together this extraordinary fusion of cultures that began while living and working in the U.S. I consider it my "political act” as it relates to immigration, justice, and valorization. It allows my Chilean traditions and culture—plus my many years of studies and research —to play a significant role in America’s Semiquincentennial.
