The goal behind this collaboration was to explore how two institutions working together can create exponentially more reach for individual artists—allowing them to be published and in an exhibition simultaneously. Relationships formed amongst artists in a deeply fractured and unsettled society have become more precious than ever, which is why “On Community and Collaboration” is not only an exhibition of photographic work, but also an example of what can happen when artists and institutions actively support one another symbiotically. The exhibition reflects the importance of local creative ecosystems, where artists can share resources, opportunities, encouragement, and ideas in ways that strengthen both individual artistic practice and collective cultural life.

“I started FRAME/SEQUENCE for two reasons: because I wanted to make publishing accessible to artists, and because I wanted to showcase the work of photographers and writers in the Philadelphia area. I believe this collaboration between F/S and DVAA will help provide more visibility and accessibility to Philadelphia artists,” said Lily Colman about the exhibition.

On Community and Collaboration will be on view in Gallery 2 at Da Vinci Art Alliance from July 28th to August 23rd. To pair with the show, there will be a photography workshop: Collaborative Cyanotype on August 15th from 12pm - 2pm.

ABOUT THE Curators:

Lily Madeleine Colman is a film-based photographer and educator from Philadelphia, PA. She makes work about womanhood, inheritance, and specifically how certain items and feelings are passed down between generations of women. Lily graduated from RISD with her MFA in 2020. She has always loved photography, education, and photo books, and wanted to make them accessible to everyone.

Julia Reber is a lens-based artist currently living in Philadelphia, PA. She received her BFA in Photography from Tyler School of Art and Architecture.  She works primarily in historical and alternative photographic processes.  Her work explores transitional spaces, loss, and ephemerality. Currently, she is the executive assistant at Da Vinci Art Alliance and the exhibitions coordinator at The Halide Project in Philadelphia, PA.
