Join us for a conversation with art historian Katherine Rangoon Doyle on Wharton Esherick and his contemporary John Bernard Flannagan. Rangoon Doyle recently published the first comprehensive book on this American sculptor, John B. Flannagan: A Salvation in Stone (2026). Flannagan is best remembered for his work in stone; and like Esherick, was an important advocate for the practice of direct carving. Flannagan’s work has largely disappeared from the art historical record, and Rangoon Doyle seeks to remind us of his important legacy.

During the conversation, we’ll learn about John B. Flannagan and Rangoon Doyle’s research on the artist. In addition, we’ll be exploring how the two sculptors overlapped, their relationships with the New York City art world and their contemporaries, and their respective attitudes and engagement with modernism.

Who is John B. Flannagan? Learn more and see the photos and catalog from his MOMA memorial show, The Sculpture of John B. Flannagan.

This is a free online event; advance reservations are required. There will be time for Q&A at the end of the conversation. Please register below to receive instructions on how to join us! If able, please consider a $5 donation to support our ongoing programs.
