Questions — and the impetus to ask questions at every turn — play an essential role in our new show and 20th annual summer juried exhibition, HISTORIES RECLAIMED.
In fact, our jury went so far as to cast several awards in the form of questions: WHO ARE YOU?...WHERE ARE YOU FROM?...WHERE ARE WE NOW?...WHERE CAN WE GO?
TONIGHT, THURSDAY, JULY 9, 7-10 PM, we will gather for our OPENING RECEPTION, toasting all 34 artists and 58 works, where we will hand out our SIX JURY AWARDS and generate plenty of lively conversation along the way.
As with almost all such receptions at OFF THE WALL/DIRTY FRANKS, we will have a spread of light hors d'oeuvres...ROSE COSSABONE will be pouring your favorite drinks...and Curator JODY SWEITZER will host the festivities.
Some may ask: is this another one of those 250th shows? (And you know we love questions!) Our artists and jury members might more aptly describe HISTORIES RECLAIMED (despite the palette of the show's graphic identity) as an important COUNTERPOINT to what many others have done.
To quote from the preface of our program (and please pick up a copy tonight or when you next stop by): "History is too often NOT in the eye of the beholder — or even the holder — but understood from the vantage point of whoever is in a position of power. They in turn disseminate their own versions of history, the ones believed to be most palatable and persuasive. We’re at a moment in our lives when there is even greater urgency to recounting and reclaiming our histories — those we have experienced, those we carry with us and the ones we choose to fight for. No truth is self-evident anymore."
That sets the stage for exploration, engagement and — you guessed it — more questions still.
So please bring your open mind this evening...and ENJOY!
