Throughout 2026, WEM’s virtual and in-person programs have explored the centennial of Wharton Esherick’s 1926 Studio, from its literal groundbreaking to the many ways Esherick broke new ground in his creative practice. Breaking Ground, WEM’s 32nd Annual Juried Woodworking Exhibition, is now on view at the museum and took inspiration from this idea. WEM asked artists to share with us works that they considered groundbreaking, inviting responses inspired by Esherick’s legacy as well as pivotal moments in their own artistic practices.

Join us Tuesday, August 25th at noon to explore selected works from Breaking Ground with Emily Zilber, Director of Curatorial Affairs and Strategic Partnerships. Along the way, attendees will learn more about the featured artists and WEM’s annual juried exhibition series.
