On December 10, 1934 Zora Neale Hurston wrote to Carl Van Vechten reflecting on a series of photographs he had taken of her, “I love myself when I am laughing. And then again when I am looking mean and impressive.” This series of watercolors tends to the threads of being witnessed. Excavating the ways that these portrayals unearth self appreciation and reveal new possibilities of identifying the self.

I Love Myself When I Am Laughing. And Then Again When I Am Looking Mean and Impressive will be on view in Gallery 3 from April 3 - April 19, 2025 with an opening reception on Saturday, April 5th from 4-7pm.
