Cawwwww, Cawwwww. Each Day, I hear and see Crows. They’re loud, striking, and nearby. They fly togther as families and friends, looking out for one another. They recognize me, and I them.
Each work here focuses on my study and desire to be closer to the natural world around me. The works here have been created in the last four years, as my part of artistic practice.
These drawings are based on both observation and imagination. Black ink seemed to me to be the best way to convey the bird’s dark absence of color.
Crows live close to human civilization and in many ways feed off of our excess and detritus. They are smart, sociable, emotional, pair for life and are very community minded.
For millennia, Crows have struck a dark tone in humans. They feed on the dead in battlefields and in cities and towns. There are unsettling myths about Crows taking the spirits of the dead up to the sky. Humans have feared thus hated and killed Crows at many times in history. In reality, scavengers like Crows and vultures perform the crucial service of cleaning up dead remains.
Crows are the main actors in these stories, rather than humans. I look forward to day when humanity understands that for us to survive, we need to see ourselves as one species inside the natural world, rather than dominant and separated.
