My recent sculpture involves figures and forms woven of reed and tar paper.
These, mostly figurative pieces , were created as three dimensional drawings. I have worked directly from drawings or paintings, as in ‘After Picasso’ from Bather with Beach Ball, 1932. The pathos of Rodin’s ‘The Burghurs of Calais’ inspired ‘5 figures with a basket’.
Having rediscovered a love of drawing and painting from the figure, I strove to integrate it with my use of non traditional materials, natural wood, reed, and leaves, that characterized earlier work.
