Résumé

Artist Biography

A childhood spent studying and performing ballet informs Summers somatic approach to her tactile paintings and spontaneous sculptures. The material dexterity she employs, hint at her years of experience working as a scenic and decorative artist. Summer was awarded scholarships to study fine art at Moore College of Art and Design where she received her BFA in 2000 and The Pennsylvania Academy of The Fine Arts where she received her MFA in 2007. Summers vibrant paintings and mirror mobile installations have been exhibited at prominent institutions in the Philadelphia area including, The Independence Seaport Museum, Rowan University, and The Kimmel Center For The Performing Arts. In 2015 she was invited to exhibit her work in the UK as the only American artist to be part of a curated exhibition, “A Moving Identity” in response to the ongoing refugee crisis. In October 2019, Summers installation of mirror mobiles appeared on the cover of the publication, American Psychologist. Currently, Summer works out of her barn studio in Bucks County PA where she lives with her husband who is a pianist, and her children Viola Rose and Indigo Sky. Her most recent work reflects her journey as a mother and her inquiry into female identity.

Artist Statement

Mixed Media Artist Statement:Growing up as a dancer, movement has always been a vital source of comfort for me. When things are in flux I feel safe. Physically jumping from piece to piece I place contrasting colors next to each other. Their close proximity provokes their potency and evokes a sense of movement and rhythm. I layer materials that are light, flexible, strong and versatile, as they are emblematic of my entwined experiences as a woman, artist and mother. I use bright and attention-grabbing materials, colors or shapes that both suggest caution and simultaneously invite the viewer in. Upon closer looking, the subtle layering of colors and textures reveals deeper images, showing how experiences evolve as they are perceived over time and reflecting the possibility of the connectedness of all things.Mirror Mobile Statement:I grew up as a dancer and movement was and is a vital source of comfort for me.When things are in flux I feel safe. The mirror mobiles embody that inherent motion. They also honor and track my journey and relationship with my body. Instead of breaking down my body through critical analysis in a mirror, I sever the mirror itself. Using mirrors I find in the trash, I break the mirror with abandon into fragments and sand down the edges so they are safe to handle. Steel fishing wire is embedded between two pieces of mirror that are joined with mirror adhesive.
