I have a minimalist’s nature. I don’t like clutter; I do like compiling objects and creating an order for them. More importantly, the process of searching for the hidden structure that lies underneath the first glance finding the ‘bones’ beneath the corporeal has become my objective. For me the process of making work is akin to the process of archeology, scraping away at the various layers, exposing the hidden yet often universal construct, creating a new geography, a new structure.
Artist Biography
T. L. Cheung is a multi-media artist currently based in Philadelphia. She holds an MFA in sculpture from Pratt Institute and a BA in Design & Industry from San Francisco State University. Having a wandering nature, she refuses to be tied down to a particular medium, choosing instead to see media as an artistic vehicle for a larger discourse in the exploration of self and the individual’s place in society. By focusing on a series of themes rather than limiting herself to a specific media she uses mythologies (common, ancient and personal) to explore what identity means in an increasingly fractured environment. The process of archeology and science play a large role in her creative process.
