Artist Biography

Noah Baumgartel is an artist based in Philadelphia PA who primarily specializes in oil painting, ink painting, and photography. His subjects are both natural and artificial landscapes executed in varying degrees of abstraction. His landscapes are derived from highway views, personal invention or a combination of both, and vary based on his travels. Though a traditional, academically trained artist, Noah creates unconventional, graphic compositions using a variety of mark making styles, frequently employing not only brushes, but also blades, blocks of wood, fingers and so on. His work strives to find balance between binaries both literal (depth vs. flatness, naturalism vs. abstraction, geometric vs. organic) to ones of more conceptual significance (natural vs. digital perception, rural vs. urban environments, growth vs. abatement). His artistic influences include Sydney Nolan, Gerhard Richter, Charlie Chaplin, Cy Twombly, and Richard Diebenkorn.
