In light of staying positive during self-quarantine, artist Peter Cunicelli is using this time to create more pieces while in his studio.
Cunicelli has been working with clay since 2000. Over the years, he has experimented with a variety of glazes and techniques, working in Raku, wood fire, porcelain, paper clay, cassius bassalt, and other stonewares. He feels like this is a great time to work on his unfinished pieces.
When asked what he is doing to stay sane during this time, Cunicelli stated,
“I had to get out, so I rode 5 short miles to my studio. I’m in a closed room here. Riding down here, my mouth is covered, besides barely seeing anyone. Clay has an intoxicating effect on me. I needed to work.”
It’s important to practice social distancing and wash your hands frequently during this time. Cunicelli has been working alone in his studio, this is a practice that he does regularly so he hasn’t had to change much about his daily routine.
Cunicelli stated, “My practice hasn’t changed too much. I spend my time alone in the studio as it was. But a good friend was here earlier. We usually hug and chat. Instead, we talked briefly through a closed door and she waved goodbye as she left. The gallery in my building was cleared out and painted to prepare for a new show. But that was postponed. So that was tough to look at (image is shown below). Normally I’ve got to see examples of fellow artists’ work.”
