Wind & Weather is a series of wall drawings which represents an alternative view of the powerful phenomena of weather, most notably droughts, rainstorms, wildfires, and hurricanes. The images are a response to the increasingly destructive power of weather our society has experienced, especially recently. The four weather phenomena I am focusing on seem to be growing more frequent and severe due to global warming. Zoë Cohen’s work represents the unpredictable nature of these forces through her patterns and mark making, which are inspired by Coptic and ancient Egyptian paintings and textiles. With the Ancient Near East as the location of the earliest recorded droughts and floods, this work embodies the impact these natural disasters have had on our society throughout history.
Zoë Cohen is a visual artist who works conceptually in a wide range of materials and modalities. Using materials as varied as fruit juice, ink, breast milk, and her own blood, she draws upon the visual resonances in our bodies to our ancient ancestors to create drawings, sculptures, and installations. Zoë’s most recent work draws parallels between ancient symbol systems and biblical mythology with modern belief systems, political struggles, and Jewish identity.
