Artist Statement
My artwork is built through conceptual blending, a theory of cognition in which diverse ideas or sets of experiences are linked to create something new. I begin with found windows or doors that will be the supports for any objects I make. The found windows and doors often have blemishes or partitions suggesting a treatment for them. Next I scavenge and document my finds with photography, and organize these accumulated materials -- photos, plans, items, and supplies -- into a "thinking space". Later, a combination of the "thinking space" and art work made from the "thinking space" materials can become an installation; or the objects (windows/doors) can be exhibited themselves. Because my process is based on experience, serendipity, and intuition, and because I build into the objects and the installation the different wanderings of my mind during the process, the art work is sometimes messy, not necessarily logical, and filled with a lot of stuff. It uses both traditional and unusual materials, handmade and manufactured goods, and multiple techniques. Since most of my ideas come to me as snippets that connect to other media, conversations and encounters, memories and dreams, there is a recognizable yet other-worldly quality to the work. The number of artifacts and the layering of the organization cause a sense of obsession as well. Moreover, each artwork and installation can be recombined as the beginning of a new conceptual blend. It seems very mysterious, but simply put, it is recycling; namely, the framing of found and disposed objects, experiences, and information into a collection that is an innovation of its own.
